Budgerigar

Budgerigar Breeding Issues

Budgies are very adaptable in their breeding habits and normally reproduce well when housed as seperate pairs in cages or in an aviary. However, if only one pair is kept, you may have some trouble with breeding. This is because these gragarious parakeets seem to need the stimulus of other birds in their close vicinity.

Nest boxes for Budgies

In the early days, coconut husks were used as nesting boxes. These served well, but today, plywood boxes are most commonly used. Attempts were made to introduce plastic models but these were not popular. Although cleaner, budgies kept in these containers show an increased tendancy to pluck their chicks as they have no wood to gnaw.

Budgies Nestbox Designs

In general, the box should be about 20cm in length, 12cm wide and 12cm high. The entrance should be about 5cm in diameter and should have a short dowel perch just below it. One end of the box should have a sliding flap which can be lifted up to allow inspection. It may be an idea to place a piece of glass just behind the flap. This will stop any eggs or chicks falling out during inspection. Prior to inspection, it is advisable to tap the flap gently. This will alert the hen of the imminent disturbance. She will then have time to move aside as apposed to a mad scramble, possibly damaging herself and/or chicks.

Budgies Nesting Material

The Nest Budgies do not use any nesting material and simply require a concave surface on which they can lay their chicks. These surfaces can be bought Budgerigar Breeding, Nest boxes for Budgies, Cages for Bdugies, Cage design, nesting material, Budgerigar Breeding, Nest boxes for Budgies, Cages for Bdugies, Cage design, nesting material, budgies for sale, budgerigar for saleseparately and you will need two per box. Alternatively, place a layer of corse sawdust about an inch thick over the bottom of the box and make slight depressions.

Breeding Cages for Budgies

Breeding Cages When breeding for show, or to produce a specific color, the parentage of the budgies is vital. Pairs should be housed separately. Breeding cages are easily available in local shops as single units. They are also available as double or triple units, separated by sliding panels. These are also usefull as stack cages for young birds, outside the breeding season. Cage fronts are also available separately, often in different sizes.

Cage Design for Budgies

Suitable designs Try to make the cage as Budgerigar Breeding, Nest boxes for Budgies, Cages for Bdugies, Cage design, nesting material, Budgerigar Breeding, Nest boxes for Budgies, Cages for Bdugies, Cage design, nesting material, budgies for sale, budgerigar for salelarge as possible as a pair may be housed in there for as long as 17 weeks if they have two rounds of chicks. I would recomend a minimum length of 60cm. The cage should be made of thin plywood rather than hardboard as the birds like to chew! Paint with a light colored emulsion which is safe to use. Do NOT use gloss or matt paints which may contain lead or other toxins. If possible secure the nesting box to the outside of the cage as this will free up interior space. Place the cage at least 30cm off the ground. Other cages can be place on top up to a maximum of three high. It is also a good idea to have a removable tray at the bottom of the cage. This should be lined with newspaper and changed on a regular basis.
