Yellow-Billed Cardinal Description:
Yellow-billed
Cardinals are 3-6.5 inches long, with a red head
and a black chin and throat. Their upperparts
are dark gray to black. The nape and underparts are white.
They do not have a crest like other cardinals. They have
a pale yellow beak, and brownish-pink legs.
The females colors are duller than the males.
Yellow-Billed Cardinal Range:
South-central parts of South America (parts of
Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina). They have been
introduced to Hawaii, where they are now common
Yellow-Billed Cardinal Habitat:
They live at low altitudes in humid scrub, brush, thickets,
and shrubbery, generally by water
Yellow-Billed Cardinal Diet:
In the wild, they eat seeds and occasionally fruit and
flowers. In the zoo, cardinals eat soft-billed
bird diet, small bird maintenance, and chopped fruits
and vegetables..
Yellow-Billed Cardinal Life Cycle:
Yellow-billed Cardinals build open, cup-shaped
nests. They usually lay 2 white eggs per
clutch. Incubation takes 13-14 days, and
the young leave the nest after 10-12 days. They live 3-5
years in captivity, and probably less in the wild.
