In the latest addition to the series, Birdkeeping
the South African Way-Part Two: Finches of Africa,
Eelco Meyjes has demonstrated his skill as both cameraman
and producer.
The key to using the video or DVD is the unique
Birdkeepers Guide Reference-a legend
located at the bottom left of each picture. For instance,
the categories in the Ant symbol signify the
requirement for livefood: (1) No livefood required;
(2) A little livefood required when breeding; (3) Livefood
required on a daily basis; (4) Heavy concentrations of
livefood required at all times. The symbol (U) signifies
unknown or information unavailable. There
are symbols for availability in South African aviaries;
compatibility; degree of difficulty in breeding;
the quantity of livefood required; and housing
requirements, including the sensitivity of species to
climatic extremes. All families of African seed-eaters
are covered. Each family is beautifully filmed in colour
and features many species unknown in Australian aviculture.
All this, together with information on housing, diet
and nesting, complete a nicely rounded package that
will appeal to a wide range of finch enthusiasts, from
beginners to experienced breeders. Highly recommended.
